Fusione fredda, avanti tutta

Sembra che l’idea di avere dei piccoli soli sulla terra sia sempre più vicina.

Leggo su ecogeek che c’è un venture capitalis, Wal van Lierop, della Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital che afferma che sta iniziando ad investire in aziende come la General Fusion che afferma di riuscire a mettere in produzione un impianto che utilizza la fusione fredda in 5 anni.

C’è anche il consorzio mondiale iter, già segnalato qui.

Se funziona la fusione fredda stiamo apposto.

Fusione fredda in a nutshell:

  • Le scorie sono costituite da trizio radioattivo che decade in 11 anni in elio stabile. Si, 11
  • Si utilizzano deuterio e trizio come combustibile che non sono altro che isotopi dell’idrogeno, che è decisamente più abbondante dell’uranio.
  • Il progetto sembra abbastanza economico per 4 cent/kwh da avere lo stesso costo del carbone.

SincUThink — Interview with the developer

So SyncUThink is a tool to synchronize all the papers that you have on CiteUlike with the one that you have on your computer.

The developer is one of my friend and I manage to get an interview for this blog. So enjoy.

Mattions: Hi Greg, Why you don’t introduce yourself to our readers?
Greg: Hi, my name is Greg Jordan, and I’m a new Ph.D. student at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton, Cambridge. I’ll be working in the area of biological sequence analysis, though I’ve just started, so who knows where I’ll end up.

Mattions: So, why did you start to write SyncUThink?
Greg: I’ve always been a bit frustrated by the process of finding, organizing, and exporting citations when writing papers while at University. So when a friend recently showed me CiteULike, I sure liked!

But I also like to save paper and read things on my computer. So, this tool simply automates what I got tired of doing: finding PDFs for articles stored in my CiteULike library. I’m also a bit of a nut for user interfaces, so I used this program as a test to see how quickly I could “whip something together” as a Java applet.

Mattions: That’s pretty clever and useful to keep everything on sync. So how long did it take to get out the v 0.1?
Greg: I started on Monday afternoon, and by Wednesday I had something working fairly well.

Mattions: Wow, that’s really fast :). Do you want to develop it further?
Greg: Not really. I created the program because I wanted something to automate a very specific and simple task that found myself doing lots of recently (finding and downloading PDFs for reading journal articles), and if I spend too much time trying to satisfy everybody’s very last suggestion or wish for the program, it will nullify the time I tried to save by writing the thing in the first place!

However, I would love to see someone take the original code and develop it further, perhaps making it compatible with a more open reference manager platform such as Connotea.

Mattions: Do you choose any type of license or are you not interested on it?
Greg: Yes, I’m licensing it under the GNU GPLv2.

Mattions: Is the code available or do you think to make it available some day?
Greg: I find Google Code really easy to work with, so it’s available at http://syncuthink.googlecode.com/ .

“Dry Lab” Notebook, un’idea veloce

Leggendo qui mi è venuta un’idea.

La domanda è: qual’è il miglior metodo per salvare i propri progressi sul lavoro di ricerca che si sta compiendo su base giornaliera.

Analizziamo le varie possibilità

Wiki

Il wiki ha senso soltanto se il rapporto giornaliero è condiviso tra tutti coloro che lavorano nel gruppo.

Questo ovviamente ha pochissimo senso nel caso di un diario personale perchè:

1) Non crei post su base giornaliera, bensi li crei per argomenti

2) Non è auto-organizzabile, ma necessità di un grande lavoro.

Blog

Il blog ha più senso del wiki perchè:

  1. Crea automaticamente post su base giornaliera, in modo automatico, ma bisogna scriverli
  2. Con un sapiente utilizzo di categorie/tag si riesce ad individuare post che tirano le somme e post che invece raccolgono idee.

Trac+Svn

E’ un buon strumento se vengono eseguiti dei commit con commenti decenti, tuttavia il wiki presente secondo me non ha troppo senso. Inoltre tutto trac forse è troppo per un singolo.

La soluzione ottimale

Quello che serve secondo me è una somma tra un blog ed un sistema tipo trac.

Il punto è non sprecare troppo tempo nel descrivere e raccontare quello ovvio, ma utilizzarlo o per sviluppare o per pensare.

Cosa è ovvio:

  • il messaggio di commit sulla repository racconta cosa è successo. Inutile replicarlo. Basta renderlo evidente. (trac già lo fa)
  • L’aggancio delle modifiche con i sorgenti ed i diff tra le varie versioni. (trac già lo fa)

Cosa non è ovvio:

  • Informazioni aggiuntive su quel tipo di commit, futuri sviluppi o possibile

Cosa non è ovvio:

  • Le idee alla base del progetto, come ed in quale modo andare avanti
  • Idee diverse che possono portare al progetto possibili evoluzioni.

Quindi un blog che automaticamente mette i commit fatti con (git/svn) in una categoria apposta, dove ritrovare tutte le informazioni necessarie e la possibilità di navigare i sorgenti sarebbe utile per tenere

Praticamente come trac, ma con la differenza che non sia un wiki, ma sia un blog. Inoltre la creazione automatica del post di commit permette di mettere all’interno del post il perché del commit e quali modifiche sono state apportate.

Ok, questo post è un casino. Ma tra la nebbia la vedo la soluzione… Forse

Il pensiero scientifico

Leggendo da “Deviazioni perfettamente ragionevoli dalle vie battute”, una raccolta dei rapporti epistolari[1] di Richard Feyman viene fuori una delle più eleganti definizioni che conosco sul metodo scientifico:

“Lo scopo del pensiero scientifico è di predire ciò che accadrà in circostanze sperimentali date. Qualunque discussione filosofica non è che un modo per eludere il punto.”

[1] Non sono sicuro di volere veder pubblicate le mie lettere in un libro postumo. Ok, si. Se è postumo non me la prendo più di tanto. Tanto oramai…..
